- Ph.D. research in biology at the University of Gent, Belgium. Title: Quantification and modeling of the pelagic microbial food web in an estuarine system, i.c. the Scheldt Estuarium. Project in collaboration with the Centre for Estuarine and Marine Research, Yerseke, Netherlands. Financed by an FWO scholarship. Successfully defended on 5 October 2009
